Woodfired with Norfolk Pine and local clay glaze this stoneware vase has been creatively designed and made by local ceramic artist, Alison Ryves.
The vase features local clay glaze which is made from clay deposits on Captain Cook Memorial Road. This clay is then cleaned of organic matter and made into a glaze with a small amount of salt added. This clay melts at the temperature it is fired of 1320°.
Reduction firing is an atmosphere in the kiln that is starved of oxygen. This makes all the metals and minerals in the clay and glaze come to the surface resulting in a beautiful, handmade creation.
